Buitenhof Lelystad
Back in 1947, the first agriculture lands in Noordoostpolder, Flevoland, were released. The farmers who wanted to apply for that land were duly assessed by government selectors. Even the background of Lelystad’s first inhabitants were evaluated because the new province needed people determined to work hard and succeed.
The first pioneers, mostly country folk, established themselves in the district known as Zuiderzeewijk and eventually became townsfolk. The new housing development known as Buitenhof Lelystad has also become a district for townsfolk who nevertheless still consider themselves outdoors people. This park-like area has lots of outside space for walking and recreating, and it has many water and sports facilities, so we felt compelled to design large homes that are rural in style. Together with fellow architects who did their share of the designs, we’ve enabled a new diverse area to spring to life.
